The Board Member
Julius R. Kejo is a retired Secretary General and CEO of the Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS), a role he served for almost four and a half years (13th Nov 2016 to 5th April 2021). Major responsibilities included providing strategic and visionary leadership with full operational responsibility in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies to effectively address emerging issues, risks and opportunities related to humanitarian work aimed at alleviating human suffering. To lead the TRCS management and making necessary decisions for day today TRCS functions according to approved plan and budgets. He spearheaded the implementation of strategic change management processes as well as reviewing the society’s performance to ensure effective utilization of physical, financial and human resources. As a CEO, Mr. Julius R. Kejo managed bilateral and cooperative partnerships with different partners including Government Institutions/departments, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International of the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies (IFRC), UN Agencies (UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, WFP etc), various Red Cross National Societies and other NGOs.
Before the SG/CEO position, Mr. Julius has worked for TRCS at different positions such as Director of Organization and Development (2010 – October 2016) responsible for assisting the National Society in developing its policies and structures, Disaster Preparedness Manager (Sept. 2005 – 2009) responsible for overseeing disaster preparedness activities and related interventions, Team Leader for Refugees Relief Operations (2002 – Aug. 2005) responsible for overseeing refugee response activities in the respective camp and in charge of field operations and accounting officer of the camp operation. In these capacities he successfully chaired and principally lead development of various milestones. In 2008-2009, he collaborated with IFRC and UN – OCHA to develop the Tsunami Early Warning Project in Tanzania.
Professionally, Mr. Julius holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Corporate Management acquired in 2010 from Mzumbe University and B.A in Economics acquired in 1994 from University of Dar Es Salaam. Having worked over 20 years in the humanitarian industry, Mr. Julius has different skills and knowledge acquired from a number of workshops and trainings attended including Effective Leadership Training (conducted by ICHA – Nairobi from Sept 2014 – March 2015), Project Management for Development Professionals (by Inside NGOs June 2014), Field Team Leader Workshop organized by IFRC in Finlands in June 2010, Comprehensive Crisis Management Course organized by Asia – Pacific Center for Security Studies based in Honolulu, Hawaii in USA (Nov-Dec 2008), Crisis and Mass Causality Management training organized by Galillee College in Israel (August 2007).
Mr. Julius is also a member of the IFRC Regional pool of OCAC (Organizational Capacity Assessment & Certification) facilitators in Africa; to that effect, as a lead facilitator in December 2018 supported the Sao Tome & Principe Red Cross National Society to carry out its self-assessment – OCAC exercise and in November 2028 as a Co-Facilitator supported the Sierra Leone Red Cross National Society on similar exercise.
Mr. Julius R. Kejo, in his retirement life, is ambitious to concentrate in agribusiness and consultative related activities.
